What is
Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an
ancient Chinese form of treatment that aids the body in healing itself
without the use of drugs and surgery.
It aids recuperation
after illness or injury and is effective for general well being.
It is safe, has no side effects, treats a wide variety of conditions
and can be used for health maintenance.
There are 14 major channels or meridians that contain 365 acupuncture
points . These points are
stimulated with needles, pressure, laser
or several other modes of therapy.
These meridians contain Qi and it is this Qi that is balanced through
acupuncture. Acupuncture is
commonly referred to as Meridian Therapy.
What is Qi?
Qi (pronounced
“chee”), is the body’s “life force” or “life energy”.
It flows smoothly and rhythmically through the acupuncture meridians
when the body is in optimal health.
When the qi is stagnated or “stuck”, is in excess or deficient in the
body, then you will have disease or pain.
The qi can be disrupted in many ways with many forms of stress such
as trauma, bad diet and emotional upheaval.
Even environmental factors such as damp, heat, cold, and dryness can
disrupt the free flow of qi. Acupuncture
balances the qi so that the energy can go where it is needed resulting in
good health.
Is it Painful?
Very fine diameter
needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points.
These needles are much smaller in diameter than a hypodermic needle
and the shape of the needle makes it virtually painless.
The most discomfort you would feel could probably be compared to a
mosquito bite.
Acupuncture can also be done with an instrument that taps the point , a
laser or finger pressure.
Patients of all ages can be treated including babies and the elderly.
How long is a
treatment?
A treatment usually lasts about 20 minutes. Most patients find this time very relaxing. The best results occur within 24 to 48 hours after the treatment, however, many feel better immediately after the session.
